General Summary: 
An industrial hygienist's duties include evaluating chemical or biological physical dangers like air quality, ergonomic challenges, dangerous sound levels and even productivity, through the establishment of and adherence to health and safety related regulations and protocols
 
Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Organizes and manages the industrial hygiene program.
  2. Guides to control the handling of hazardous materials or disposal of hazardous wastes; instructions to control the issuance, labeling, and storage of such materials; and standards and procedures to protect employees and materials from ionizing radiation.
  3. Analyzes progress reports, determines exposure trends, and evaluates program accomplishments in order to coordinate the program properly and to be in a position to plan for training, special studies, surveys, or indicated corrective action. Maintains close liaison and cooperation with all parts of organization to assure a complete integration of the industrial hygiene program.
  4. Serves as an adviser to management on industrial hygiene matters concerning modification to or evaluation of new work processes, equipment, or facilities related to the health of the workforce. Researches complex or controversial issues, and makes recommendations to ensure policies remains in conformance.
  5. Researches new advances in industrial hygiene and solves unusual programs where no regulatory standards exist.
  6. Resolves complex programs and issues independently with work being reviewed at project completion to ensure policy compliance. Applies a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods to assess and improve industrial hygiene program effectiveness.
  7. Evaluates overall program accomplishments, and develops long range plans and recommendations as to the best methods to meet organizational goals and objectives.
  8. Plans, organizes, and directs regular on-site surveys and investigations of all works areas to determine the nature and severity of health hazards present. Selects, sets up, calibrates, monitors, and reads a wide variety of sampling and measuring devices.
  9. Prepares technical reports based on findings of studies, inspections, analysis of laboratory results, etc.
  10. Promotes industrial hygiene practices by working with employers and employees and by participating in public information activities. Provides and presents justification for findings to interested parties when appropriate.
  11. Responsible for recognizing, evaluating, and controlling environmental conditions or stresses that may arise in or from the workplace which may cause sickness, impaired health, significant discomfort, or inefficiency.
Qualifications
Education, Work Experience, Certification and/or Licensure:
  1. Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Hygienist, Environmental Science, Chemistry, Mechanical Engineering.
  2. Experience in a Manufacturing setting. (To include internship / Co-op positions)
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Scientific expertise – Knowledgeable about environmental and occupational hazards and should be able to quickly identify problems related to air quality, radiation, and other environmental factors
  2. Analytical thinking – This role also requires strong analytical skills to assess issues and develop working hypotheses about the causes of environmental and occupational health issues
  3. Attention to detail – As the industrial hygienist you should also be very attentive and able to notice, measure, and monitor slight changes that can impact workers’ health and wellness
  4. Problem-solving skills – Technical problem-solving is vital in this role, to devise short- and long-term solutions to environmental and safety issues on jobsites
  5. Communication skills –Effective written and verbal communicators to prepare reports related to their findings and solutions and collaborate with physicians and leadership.
 
Physical Requirements:
  1. Incumbents may be routinely exposed to equipment operational noise heat-cold-dust, and/or aircraft equipment, parts, or fuel odors.
  2. Incumbents may be required to stand, sit, squat, walk, bend, climb ladders, move, reach, or stretch for prolonged time periods with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  3. Work in a safe and professional manner while adhering to all regulatory requirements (OSHA, DOT, EPA, State, and Federal regulations, etc.).
  4. Read, hear, speak, and see with no restrictions, as required by job duties.
  5. Comprehend and adhere to management directions and/or safety instructions with no restrictions.
  6. Effectively communicate in Business English language.
  7. Pull, push, carry, lift, or move items up to 10 lbs. throughout the work shift without assistance, as required by job duties.
  8. Pull, push, carry, lift or move materials/people/items/equipment weighing up to 50lbs or more during the work shift, with the use of Company provided “reach assistance technology” or “movement assist technology” (fork-lifts, pallet jacks, pulleys, dolly’s, robotics reach equipment, people movers etc.), as required by job duties.
